Fun Fall Crafts to Do With Your Kids!

Sep 27, 2016, Sonya Patel

The weather is getting cooler and staying indoors is becoming the defacto background for activities. Rather than let your kids fall into a pattern of television and video games, plan some fun crafts and recipes that you can do together which will keep them active and engaged, no screen time required. The only thing required for these activities is a pumpkin!

First you are going to need a pumpkin. Most grocery stores sell a wide variety of sizes this time of year. If you live near farmland, many farms offer pumpkin picking, which can be a fun day activity while the weather is still mild. Often these farms also have other fun activities, such as mazes, hay rides, apple cider and more. Google pumpkin picking in your area to find a pumpkin farm near you.

Once you have your pumpkins picked out, there are lots of fun things you can do. The most popular is to make jack-o-lanterns. You can take it one step further, and use your carved pumpkin as the head for a scarecrow. Ask your kids to collect some of their old or too-small clothes, and together, create an outfit for your scarecrow. Stuff the clothes with hay, or cotton, or more old clothes to create a human type shape. Attach your pumpkin head and prop your scarecrow outside your house on the porch or in the yard using summer patio furniture. Don’t forget to name him/her!

When you carved your pumpkins, you probably scraped out the seeds. Don’t throw them away! Pumpkin seeds are a tasty and nutritious snack. In their tiny little shape, pumpkin seeds (also known as pepitas) pack in protein, fiber, antioxidants and a ton of minerals. Roast them in your oven with your choice of seasons – sea salt, or cinnamon/sugar, or a little cayenne pepper if you prefer a little heat.
