Healthy Tips to Reduce Illness in your Classroom (or Home)!

It’s that time of year – not holiday time, but sickness time. The time when it seems like everyone around you is sick or is in the process of getting sick. If your profession requires you to be around people and kids all day (hello teachers!), your odds of being exposed germs increases. Here are some ways you can protect yourself and the students in your classroom.
- Wash your hands! Washing your hands is the number one way to reduce the spread of germs and infection. Approximately 80 percent of infectious diseases are spread through touch. You probably already know this, but it’s good to remind your children or students. Regularly review the proper methods for hand washing. Sing together the ABC’s or the Happy Birthday song (twice) to ensure that kids are soaping their hands long enough. And don’t get so caught up in making sure your child is washing his/her hands that you forget your own!
- Sanitize EVERYTHING. Keep a disinfectant handy, and at the end of every day use it to wipe down commonly touched surfaces, such as doorknobs, handles, sink faucets, desks, etc. Don’t forget to regularly clean and sanitize any shared objects in your room such as books or toys.
- Teach kids healthy habits. Obviously, as their teacher there is only so much you can do to keep your students healthy – they need to also be following healthy lifestyle practices at home. But you can teach your students the importance of cleaning food utensils, not sharing silverware with another person, and getting enough sleep. Hopefully, your students will take what they learn and put it into practice at home!
- Stay Active. Even if you are stuck inside a classroom all day with your students, you can stay active together as a class. Exercise and moderate activity have been shown to help reduce cold and flu viruses throughout the year. Take a brain break a few times a day and ask all your students to walk around the periphery of your classroom. Or play a quick game of Simon Says to get everyone out of their desk.
